Isojoki Church

The long distance to Lapväärtti Church created a need for a local church in Isojoki. Construction began in the 1730s when Luukas Svartti convinced the locals to support the project. The original church was completed in 1733 and was known for a long time as ‘Luukas’ Church.’nnBy the 1820s, the old church had deteriorated, and a decision was made in 1826 to build a new one based on designs by Carl Ludvig Engel. Construction began in 1829 under master builder Erik Kuorikoski, and the church was completed in 1833.

The church’s bell tower was built by Karl and Mats Hannus. It houses two bells, the larger from 1765 and the smaller from 1756. The church features an altarpiece by an unknown artist and ceiling paintings by Urho Lehtinen. The pulpit decorations and the old hymnboard were crafted by Ananias Andersson in the 19th century.

The church’s 21-stop organ was renovated in 1970 by organ builder Veikko Virtanen. The mission candleholder, crafted by Olavi Harju-Villamo, was donated in 1996. The church has seating for 900 people.
