The Emigration Museum is a museum complex located on the shores of Lake Kalajärvi in Peräseinäjoki. There you can learn about the stories of emigrants in four different residential buildings that have come from different parts of the world. The Hakala House, built around 1910 in Ilmajoki, tells the story of emigration to America. The Knuuttila House, donated to the museum from the village of New Finland in Saskatchewan, Canada, dates back to 1893 and features its original interior. The life of sugar cane farm workers in Australia is depicted in a workers’ barracks built in the 1920s in Ingham, Queensland. Life in Siberia is depicted in a house built in 1897 by Matti Unkuri, who was exiled there with his family.
The museum area can be explored with a guide or on your own, alone or in a group. The houses are open to visitors during museum opening hours and contain authentic objects and furnishings. The area serves as a meeting place and source of information for anyone interested in history, international life, or discovering their own roots. The attraction also serves as a bridge to migration in the present day.
The Migration Museum has both permanent and temporary exhibitions, the latest of which tells the story of migration to Sweden. The museum also hosts seminars, concerts, and other events. Welcome!
