Isokyrö open-air museum

Located next to the historic Isokyrö Old Church on the scenic banks of the Kyrönjoki River, this museum area offers a captivating glimpse into local history. The landmark of the grounds consists of two traditional 1.5-story Ostrobothnian farmhouses, beautifully arranged alongside traditional outbuildings to recreate an authentic old family courtyard. The museum grounds feature 12 historic structures, including the main building, Piuhola House, which dates back to 1768. Visitors can explore an 18th-century gate loft, an 1863 windmill relocated from Ylistaro, as well as a traditional dower house, stable, blacksmith’s workshop, sauna, drying barn, and several historic storehouses. The local heritage house, moved to the site in 1991, now houses a catering service.

Across from the Old church, the Carolinian Center in the parish granary hosts a fascinating exhibition about the Battle of Napue and the Great Wrath, while the old poorhouse granary is rented for exhibitions in the summer.

The museum is open from the beginning of June until through the second weekend of August and at other times by appointment. The admission fee is €5 and includes a guided tour.

Additionally, the historical grounds come alive every year on the second weekend of August for the popular 18th-Century Market, where artisans from all over Finland gather to sell magnificent handcrafted products.
