Old Hospital Building

The municipal hospital designed by architect Alvar Aalto was completed in 1928.
The building plans, along with work specifications and cost estimates, were presented to the Alajärvi municipal council in September 1924. Construction began in 1927 and was completed a year later.

The hospital building, which reflects the classicism of the 1920s and was realized in a slightly modified form from Aalto’s original plans, ultimately included four patient rooms, a nurse’s room, an office, and the necessary service and care facilities.

The most architecturally significant elements of the building are the four-column loggia at the front and the columned interior hall.
Today, the old municipal hospital building houses Kohtaamispaikka Aaltola, a community meeting place that serves as home to several local associations.
